Leading Antispyware Vendors Quietly Drop WhenU Detection

It appears that two popular antispyware companies, PestPatrol (owned by Computer Associates) and Lavasoft, have stopped detecting software from WhenU. In tests performed recently by Eric Howes, using the latest updated target database files, neither PestPatrol nor Ad-aware detected any software from WhenU.

Antispyware Consortium Implodes

The Consortium of Anti-Spyware Technology Vendors (COAST) appears to be undergoing a messy self-destruction today. Two of COAST's founding members, Webroot Software and Aluria Software, withdrew as members of the consortium on Friday. Another founding member, Lavasoft, withdrew from COAST in December 2003. All three companies cited concerns about the direction in which COAST was heading as reasons for severing ties with the group.

Microsoft To Deny Updates To Pirates: Microsoft soon will block pirated copies of Windows from being able to install security and bug updates. Initially, people with illegitimate copies of Windows still will be able to use the automatic update function built into Windows. Eventually, I predict, that also will end.

Digital Restriction Management (DRM) is software designed to limit what you can do with digital products such as software programs, digital music and movies. Most commonly DRM attempts to prevent copying of software, such as ripping CD music into MP3 files.
